Oil travels before it drips, so the source gets traced from underneath

Signs of an oil leak

Where the drip lands is not where the leak started. Oil runs along the engine and the wind pushes it back.

  • Dark spots where you park
  • Burning smell after driving
  • Oil level dropping between changes
  • Smoke from under the hood
  • Oil warning light
  • Grime built up on one side of the engine
  • Spots on the driveway that were not there last month
How engine oil travels from its source before it drips An engine in side profile with the front of the car to the left. Dotted paths run from the valve cover, the timing cover and the rear seal down across the block and rearward, meeting at a single puddle on the ground well behind where the leak actually started. 1 2 3 4 5
  1. Valve cover gasket. High up and very common. Oil runs the whole height of the engine from here.
  2. Timing cover. The front of the engine. Its drip lands under the middle of the car.
  3. Rear main seal. Slow, steady, and easy to mistake for the gasket sitting above it.
  4. Oil pan and drain plug. Lower down, so this is the one whose drip lands closest to the source.
  5. The puddle. Where it all lands. Almost never directly under whatever is leaking.
Oil runs down, and the wind pushes it back. The spot on your driveway is the last clue, not the first.

Oil Leak FAQ

Do you diagnose oil leaks in Hayward?

Yes. Bay Motors traces oil leaks to their source for Hayward drivers instead of guessing at a gasket.

Can I drive with the oil pressure light on?

No. Stop safely and shut the engine off. Driving with no oil pressure can destroy the engine. Arrange a tow.

Will an oil change fix the leak?

No. An oil change and a leak diagnosis are two different jobs. Fresh oil leaks out the same hole.

Does a leak mean I need a new engine?

A leak by itself does not say that. The source, how fast it leaks, and the condition of the engine decide what makes sense.

Can you tell what it is from a photo of the spot?

A photo helps describe the concern. It cannot trace where the oil came from, and that is the part that decides the repair.

What warranty do you offer?

Bay Motors backs the parts we supply and install and the labor for those repairs for 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. Call the shop about coverage on your specific repair.
